Expected Outcomes
The RESPONDER Partnership aims to revolutionize our understanding and approach to responder-perpetrated sexual exploitation and abuse (RP-SEA) in humanitarian crises. Through rigorous mixed-methods research across 6 diverse contexts, this project will deliver groundbreaking outcomes with far-reaching impacts:
1. Unprecedented Data on RP-SEA Prevalence
For the first time, we will provide reliable estimates of the scale of RP-SEA in South Sudan and Haiti using innovative respondent-driven sampling and successive sampling-population size estimation. This data will be pivotal in raising awareness, driving policy changes, and mobilizing resources to address RP-SEA.
2. Nuanced Understanding of Reporting Dynamics
Our research will uncover the complex factors influencing RP-SEA reporting across different contexts, providing crucial insights to improve reporting mechanisms and support for victims/survivors.
3. Inclusive Victim/Survivor-Centred Approaches
By examining the differential experiences of women, men, LGBTQI+ individuals, and persons with disabilities, we will develop tailored, culturally-sensitive strategies for prevention, support, and justice that address the unique needs of diverse groups affected by RP-SEA.
4. Evidence-Based Policy and Program Recommendations
Our findings will directly inform government, UN, and civil society policies and programs, leading to more effective prevention strategies and accountability measures for RP-SEA.
5. Strengthened Global Research Network
The project will establish a robust international network of researchers, practitioners, and community members, fostering ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange to combat RP-SEA.
6. Enhanced Civil-society Capacity
We will empower local organizations with research-based tools and knowledge to advocate for social reform and support for victims/survivors, including children fathered by peacekeepers.
7. Next Generation of Skilled Researchers
The project will train a cohort of interdisciplinary researchers equipped with advanced mixed-methods and participatory research skills, ensuring sustained expertise in this critical field.
8. Development of a New Conceptual Framework
We will develop a novel socio-ecological model for RP-SEA that integrates intersectionality and power dynamics unique to this type of GBV in humanitarian contexts.
9. Transformative Impact on Accountability
Our research will pave the way for more effective, context-specific accountability mechanisms that balance justice with community restoration expectations.
10. Global Paradigm Shift
Ultimately, this project aims to catalyze a fundamental shift in how the international community perceives, prevents, and responds to RP-SEA, moving towards a more just, accountable, and victim/survivor-centred approach in humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.
By delivering these outcomes, the RESPONDER Partnership will advance academic knowledge and drive tangible, positive change in the lives of those affected by RP-SEA, setting a new standard for research impact in this field.
